But the credit crunch means those seeking private loans for the coming academic year are likely to encounter problems, from higher interest rates to lenders that balk at making loans to any but the most creditworthy. "It's more important than ever for families to plan in advance," says Kevin Walker, CEO of Simple Tuition, which runs a Web site that lets borrowers compare offerings from lenders that pay it for placement.
